Theft of metal / lead

As you are probably aware there has been a national rise in the theft of metal. (predominantly lead and copper)   It is Hampshire Constabulary’s aim to take action against metal thieves, however, there are some tips to try and avoid this happening to your property.

Identify any valuable metal on your premises and ensure it is adequately protected.

Don’t leave ‘climbing aids’ e.g. wheelie bins, pallets or ladders where they can be used to gain access to the roof.

Be aware of people acting suspiciously e.g. unexpected contractors or persons seeking work.  Record as much detail about them and any vehicle used and REPORT THEM

Use anti-vandal paint above 2 metres high and include a sign warning people of its presence.

Keep any gates locked and restrict vehicular access.

Make sure external lighting is in good working order.

Consider replacing lead with an alternative material or property marking it with a ‘DNA’ based liquid or grease.

Maintain hedges and shrubbery to avoid creating hiding places.

“Remember me?” I did some work on your house…………

Does this sound familiar?  This is where elderly and vulnerable people across Portsmouth paid for work on their properties that was never actually done.

If you are approached in the street or at home and asked to pay for work on your house, NEVER hand over any cash.  If the person is genuine they will be able to post you an invoice.

Have a chain or spy hole fitted to your font door to see visitors and ask for identification.

Do not assume that any trades people approaching you or coming to your door are genuine.  If they do not have ID and you are not comfortable speaking to them shut the door or walk away.

How you can help the POLICE

Keep in contact with the Police.  Let us know about the issues affecting your neighbourhood and give us your honest views on issues that affect the community as a whole.  While you need to be willing to raise issues of local concern and discuss issues with a member of the neighbourhood team you do not necessarily need to have a positive view of the Police.  Whatever your views we would like to know.  If you would like to be part of the Police Key Individual Network where Police will keep in contact with you on a regular basis to hear your views please let us know.

Special Constabulary

Special Constables are needed in all of the Operational Command Units covered by Hampshire Constabulary.  You too can make a real difference in your local community.  Hundreds of men and women from all walks of life have already taken up the challenge and joined the Special Constabulary.  We are looking for people with common sense and maturity who can spare a minimum of four hours per week to patrol the streets of your community alongside colleagues from the regular force. The lower age limit is 17.5 years old but there is no upper age limit.

If you would like more information about becoming a Special Constable please contact us.

Business Watch

Since its commencement over 60 businesses have joined the scheme and is utilised by members to share valuable information with each other and the Police.  The scheme has resulted in the arrest of offenders and the gathering of valuable intelligence.

If you are a local business and wish to join the scheme you can e-mail us on gdl4OCUPN01Business This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

Street Briefings / Resident Meetings

The Police are keen to find out from members of the public who reside in Drayton and Farlington to tell us what issues they may be having in the area where they live.

Please fill in the form below with your top 3 priorities and either hand them into the information centre, next to the Drayton Methodist Church, Havant Road where regular Police Beat Surgeries are held or hand them into Cosham Police Station for the attention of the Drayton and Farlington Neighbourhood team.

Alternatively you can email the team on This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

Residents meetings, beat surgeries and street briefings are held in your area as well.  Please look out for advertising of these events on http://www.aboutmyarea.com/.uk

Editorial Comment

The Neighbourhood Police Team have given the existing help volunteers can give to the police. I have felt for some years, that we needed a discussion on where volunteers could be used to help the police in policing our area. Haley Storey has set up a blog How-can-the-Public-Work-With-the-Police on the www.aboutmyarea.co.uk web site where such a discussion can take place. Alternatively, you can, of course write or email the neighbourhood team at Cosham Police Station, or myself. So, if you have any ideas or thoughts on where volunteers could be helpful, please let us know.
