Eco Challenge at Springfield school.
Portsmouth.
Springfield School has been offered the opportunity to take part in the Eco Challenge project run by the Field Studies Council and funded through the Big Lottery Fund Changing Spaces programme. This means that the school has received funding so that 30 selected pupils from Years 7 & 8 will take part in the Eco Challenge programme which offers the opportunity to experience and enjoy the natural environment through a range of adventurous, challenging and explorative activities in a safe and supportive environment. This once only opportunity is fully funded and fits very well with our push towards promoting Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in the school. Eco Challenge offers
A three night Eco Challenge residential experience at a Field Studies Council (FSC) Centre
Three days of post course sessions in schools grounds or local community in the term following the residential
The lucky pupils are going to the Orielton Field Studies Centre in Pembrokeshire (a very different environment to SE England) The school’s ESD pupil group are to go along with Year 7 & 8 pupils who would really benefit from this and would deserve such team building activities. This is a once only opportunity and aims to address the fact that only 1 in 5 young people regularly get to visit the countryside. The FSC is an educational charity that operates a network of Centres throughout the UK. It has over 60 years experience of running safe, effective and fun curriculum linked residential courses for young people. Health and Safety is of paramount importance to the FSC and the Codes of Practice exceed the government’s guidelines. All of FSC codes of practice and a Parents Guide are available on the website

We are aiming for the post course sessions to involve assemblies to peer groups, Governors and presentations to local Neighbourhood Forums to share in their learning. At this stage we anticipate work in developing a conservation area in the school grounds through support from the Civic trust and other local groups. We will be opening and running allotments maintained by the pupils on behalf of the school and would like to request help from the local community here. If there is anyone out there who is waiting for allotment space we will be able to offer this to a local resident FREE OF CHARGE in return for running the allotment club with the pupils either at lunch times or after school. We can draw up a contact and of course all health and safety precautions will be followed. If you are interested then do phone the school (023 92319119) or drop me an email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .
