Information Centre

It does not seem possible that we have been at the Methodist Church site for just over a year. By the number of you calling on us, we feel that at last we have made you all realise what sort of information we have, and can obtain on your behalf. We of course also have the backup of the Police Surgeries, and the Solicitor not forgetting the Children’s Information Service (CHAT).

There is much talk at present about the huge increases in our Gas & Electric, and although we do not give much thought to it during the summer months, winter will be creeping up on us before long. What is an unwise move, when you are older is to turn your heating down too low or off, in order to afford to buy food. I am sure everyone must realise that to keep warm you must have heat and a hot meal every day. If you are worried about the heating costs and the increase in food, there are many schemes that may be able to help YOU. Please call in for details. It is a known fact that the high cost of heating our homes, cause much suffering because of low pensions. ‘Help the Aged say that more than 5 million older people cannot afford to heat their homes properly. As a result they are at risk of illness and death from cold, damp and draughty homes’. The Winter Warmth Information Pack will be out very soon, please make sure you call in for a copy. In the meantime we can help with Information on Benefits, and details on insulating your home, and the various schemes that are around which may help.

Please can everyone take special care to look out for older people in the Drayton Farlington area this winter, especially neighbours who may be suffering in silence.

The No Cold Caller stickers have proved to be in much demand.

The green sacks issued by Portsmouth City Council for garden waste has proved to be difficult for many older people in the Drayton & Farlington area. We are trying to obtain them, so that older people can get them from the Information Centre, instead of travelling to the Guildhall.

Our Notice Board has some news of events taking place in the future, and details of our opening hours. Many residents call in to use the computer, and we now have a laminating service that we can offer.

Do you like helping people? Do you have an inquisitive mind? Do you have some free hours per week/month. If so we are looking for volunteers to help us! If you are interested please call in, have a look round and see what we do.

The Drayton & Farlington Action Group Committee are  looking for a Secretary, if anyone is interested to find out more please call in for details.

We look forward to seeing you at the Information Centre to assist you in solving your problem/difficulty, or helping you to find information.
