Closure, Closure, Closure is the new political catch phrase.
Closure of Drayton Post Office
Thanks go to all of the 3000 of you who signed our petition against the closure. There are two businesses interested in having the Post Office on their premises and the 70 plus businesses in the Drayton village shopping area have signed a petition supporting the move. The closure of the Drayton Post Office has greatly inconvenienced the businesses. Having to queue at the Cosham Post Office to deal with their mail and then go to a bank to get change, is cutting back on their time to transact their business. Our elderly are also finding it difficult having to get a bus to Cosham, or Farlington, and then queue at the Post Office.
The petition will be given to Ward Councillor Robin Sparshatt to hand in to the Portsmouth City Council at a public place in Drayton.
Closure Of Highgrove Lodge
Following the announcement that Highgrove would close in July and the news of the credit crunch and depressed housing market, we wrote to the City Council party leaders asking why Highgrove could not be kept open until development of the site was more imminent. We have been told that the money from the sale of the site will be used to kick start a complete redevelopment of all old people’s homes in Portsmouth. There will be a move away from having institutions to having flats where people can have their independence with support packages of home care. These extra care sheltered flats will be built at Brunel Court in Lake Road and at Ford Lodge in Milton. The Council say they want to move on this as quickly as possible. The question of why, in the current economic situation, Highgrove can not be left open until sale of the site is more imminent has still not been answered. The City Council say they will demolish the building in September, about the time you receive this newsletter, and as far as we can ascertain have no buyer for the site. It will be a tragedy if the site lies derelict for a year or more when it could have continued to be successfully used by the local residents.
